I noticed in your photo a roofline or interior pitched ceiling finish that looks really interesting. Some kind of woven thing that looks like very thin pieces of black walnut. Any idea what that was/is?

That's just the well built dark walnut headboard of a bed on which I posed at JW Marriott in Palm Desert :-)
Thank you. Weaving wood is no easy thing. That would be an expensive headboard in my world.
It seems to be a cultural thing esp for my New Yorker and Irish friends. Kind of a funny art how they curse sometimes :-)
