Inspired by a Substack prompt
Query here…
“Who blasts Wilson Phillips?”
Who would dare ...
Utter blasphemy from your lips!
who dare disses these fine dames!
Do not stand up!
Zip your piehole!
Zip it— oh wait…
I’m taking “blast”
bullet train straight to the negative.
Who enthusiastically “blasts”
the wonderful ear candy of
Wilson Phillips on your speaker?
Yeah, that sounds better...
Wilson Phillips…
a shameless love fest.
Even some dudes can admit
to devouring some WP.
You know who you are!
Those girls got us into our feels, right?
Good ol’ 90s! Golden times...
Golden like Chynna’s hair
She had the cutest short blunt ‘do!
Carnie had that cut too but Wendy
had the loveliest loose red locks
All the gals had the kind of look
that was for lack of better words— kind.
But back to their music though
It’s … a warm campfire
to cozy up to on a
sleepy southern California beach.
What a treasured harmony!
It hit us like a graceful gust
from the trio’s debut song,
the heavenly “Hold On”.
You’re anti-hope if you hate “Hold On”
Hey, did you know it’s a sobriety song?
You can’t help but to sing along.
to this musical sunstorm.
“Hold On” is tough love,
that makes ya hold yourself accountable,
that gets ya through.
Quite the song for the compassionate…
From the beginning piano notes,
initial little drops of rain—
to that thunderous drum transition
after the bridge— what a rush!
The girls got other deep feelers too
Those heart wrenchers…cue the sigh…
Remember “Release Me, “You’re in Love”
“You Won’t See Me Cry” …
Ah, they were refreshing and clean
like… the musical equivalent
of brushing your teeth
with peppermint paste.
And they were clean California girls,
clean in their jeans, comfortable
Ladies using their voice to carry themselves.
They had fun, without compromising themselves.
A girl group with…no flash, no brash…
No booby and booty bopping…
No acting like dirty hoe tricks… No theatrics…
No bodysuit wearing… No cheap gimmicks…
Imagine that!
Damn the music torpedo machine
that killed off girl group harmony
for discord and deviance! Utter shame!
The music industry did their best
to extinguish Wilson Phillips—
but it cannot blow out
the thrice lit eternal flame.

Wonderful! 🤗 I live it! Did you submit this to Demi Pietchell’s writing contest? I can't recall the exact Wilson Phillips prompt, but there was one in her challenge. I have to go back and find it.
Well written, and I live it!
