Poem (audio) with commentary
They are throwing Segregation a welcome party.
Yes, a welcome party.
They’re holding it at an “affinity space”, of course.
They’re sending out an s-load of invitations
that should get sent back to sender!
Refuse to respond to the RSVP!
That would be wise— not rude.
Commentary:
Segregation, particularly of the racial and ethnic kind, is rearing its ugly head again. Stirring up new controversy, some colleges and universities are normalizing segregated housing units for students and holding separate graduations, according to race or ethnicity. Other institutions and entities are encouraging racialized “affinity spaces”, which are deemed innocent “safe space” gatherings.
Thankfully, because humankind has not gone completely nuts yet, this renewed and sugar-coated push for segregation will ultimately fail. The fight against racial animus is greater than this nonsense. Let’s focus more effort and celebration over the coming together of human beings. Tearing ourselves will never lead to bonafide equality amongst us all.
