No more real conversation
about heart of matters;
but— we easily bring up
talk about “the weather”
our favorite fallback:
during fall and any season,
our deliberate distraction.
In the thick of November,
the dialogue is something like:
“Boy, hasn’t it been
downright COLD as of late?”
You reply automatically
with nicety:
“Yes, it has.”
Under our breath, some of us
utter in retort,
“Yes, and YOU too, YOU’RE so cold,
COLD like a Canadian blizzard!”
…If actually uttered, would
the “cold” person dare
to say anything back?
That would make for much
more intriguing conversation…
But we hardly ever
say anything—
nothing pivotal
to one another,
even though we have
wide capacity to do this.
We get so stuck,
happily stuck
on talk about the weather.
Maybe tomorrow,
in far off future,
we’ll do better,
bring back, dare to broach
weighty talk again
on life and its circumstances
with admirable approach
and actual substance?
Well? Now, let’s take a chance.
Commentary:
At last, after decades, a piece of mine came together about the awkard filler talk about the weather that we humans so often do. :-)
Also, this poem was partially conjured up from this song:
“Head Over Heels” by Tears Tor Fears
with the opening line:
”I wanted to be with you alone and talk about the weather”
The full lyrics and video beg to be elaborated on further. Save for another post :-)!
That is a very nice song!
