Upside Down Cake

Life is now an upside-down cake
Sweet but not quite what I crave
compared to other kinds.
Not the prettiest but, hey, it’s cake
and it’s been given to me—
so yes, I take it

Mornings after setting the snooze button,
Crossing the Atlantic,
on the plane, first time, to Britain
When Bruno was actually feeling romantic,
a good rock concert at the Key,
The turn of the century,
And much of my 20s.

I slept through it all.

Poor Nova

the odd sibling out

she has to deal with three boys,
one, her dear daddy

And it will only get worse
into her tumultuous teens

Free Speech and a Shark

People demonize
free speech like a shark but should
be in awe of both
